It is a staged chamber opera, not a concert work: the Melodiya release ripped here prints "MONOOPERA" on the front and back covers (MEL CD 10 01680); Sikorski catalogues it under opera as "Briefe des van Gogh, Monooper in zwei Teilen"; the New Grove Dictionary of Opera covers Frid (vol. II p.303); de.wikipedia calls it "Mono-Oper in zwei Teilen fuer Bariton" and en.wikipedia "a mono-opera in two parts for baritone and chamber ensemble".
