Pepusch s masque Venus and Adonis, premiered 12 March 1715 at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane as an afterpiece to Beaumont and Fletcher s Rule a Wife and Have a Wife. Staged work, not a concert piece: the booklet of Ramee RAM 1502 reproduces the title page of the 1715 printed libretto - "Venus and Adonis: a Masque / Written by Colley Cibber, Esq; / Set to Musick by Dr. Pepusch" - with its scene directions ("The Scene is in the Idalian Woods"), and its essay by Robert Rawson records at least 23 performances at Drury Lane before revivals at Lincoln s Inn Fields in 1718-19, 1725 and 1730. Distinct from Blow s Venus and Adonis (opera 97), which findopera already holds; this is a different work by a different composer. findopera held no row for it under any title.
